The Liga MX is actually split into two seasons every year, the Apertura and Clausura. Winning one title or the other in the regular season isn't worth much; it's what the teams do in the playoffs of each that truly matter. That's why this has become one of the craziest leagues to try to handicap in the world.

America

One of Mexico's top teams, Club America has 12 total titles to celebrate. None, though, have come since Apertura 2014, and that has surely made supporters a little anxious for some more hardware.

Atlas

Even after finishing sixth in Clausura last season, Atlas will enter the 2017-18 campaign with a real threat of relegation looming over its head thanks to extremely poor 2015-16 results.

Cruz Azul

Cruz Azul has barely been hanging on in recent years, failing to log more than 22 points in any of the individual tournaments in the last three seasons.

Guadalajara

Guadalajara will be flying high after winning the Clausura last season. Most believe this is a team primed for more success at the highest level of Mexican soccer. A 13th overall title (and maybe a 14th!) isn't out of the question this year.

Leon

Leon fell off just a bit after a great 2015-16 campaign that saw it log 30 points in both the Clausura and the Apertura. There's no threat of relegation any time soon, but winning a title could be problematic.

Lobos BUAP

BUAP is in the Liga MX for the first time, and it obviously has a long, uphill battle just to stay here in the top flight. Relegation for Los Lobos seems relatively inevitable in the near future.

Monterrey

Monterrey has generally been one of the better teams in Mexican soccer, but last season was a frustrating one, resulting in just a total of 52 points and just one goal to show for one round of playoff action the entire year.

Morelia

The 2016-17 season has to be labeled a success for Moreila. The team staved off relegation and helped shore up a more permanent spot in the top flight, and it even made the Clausura playoffs.

Necaxa

Necaxa stayed up last year thanks to 47 total points between the two tournaments, and it even darn near made some history by immediately coming up to the top flight and winning the Apertura. The team was knocked out in the semifinals, but just to get that far was a huge accomplishment a year after promotion.

Pachuca

Pachuca finished second best in Apertura last season but floundered in the second half of the year and managed just 24 points and failed to get into the playoffs.

Puebla

After amassing just 36 points in the two leagues last year, Puebla is a threat to be relegated in 2017-18. The team figures to need at least 40 points to comfortably stay up.

Pumas

UNAM saw a big spike in attendance last year after a solid '15-'16 campaign. The results didn't play out on the field with just 45 points for the season, including a second-to-last finish in Clausura.

Queretaro

Eventually, Queretaro is going to be a threat for relegation. The team hasn't amassed more than 22 points in four consecutive seasons, and that's the stuff that gets teams knocked down to Ascenso with the strange three-year relegation table in play.

Santos

Even though Santos didn't ultimately advance to the semifinals in the Clausura playoffs, it was nice to see this team get off the mat and make a nice run in the second half of the season after a disappointing Apertura.

Tigres

U.A.N.L. only has five titles in its history, but it's coming off of one of those titles last season from Apertura.

Tijuana

Tijuana was the No. 1 seed in both Apertura and Clausura last year, yet it managed just one victory in the postseason. Better results are expected and demanded of the teams that finish at the top of the table, though that's life in a playoff format.

Toluca

Toluca is starting to put together more consistent results at the top flight. That's four straight terms with at least 22 points, including racking up 32 in one of its best seasons ever in the 2015 Apertura.

Veracruz

Veracruz has amassed a total of just 47 points in its last three seasons, and if that doesn't improve quickly in 2017-18, this will be the team that takes the drop even if it isn't the worst team in the Liga MX this year.
