It was a tale of two seasons a year ago for Pumas, as they finished 6th in Apertura but a pathetic 17th in Clausura. Many people were calling for the head of manager Francisco “Paco” Palencia but for now he is still at the helm. While Paco survived, some of the players did not, as the team sent Alejandro “Pikolin” Palacios to Atlético San Luis and they let Darío Verón go to Club Olimpia. How Pumas does in 2017-2018 may be determined by how well they replace those two players.
Pumas Mexican Liga MX Odds
Pumas is no threat to the top teams in Liga MX but they could be in trouble in terms of relegation. The Apertura finish last season looks to have been a mirage, and the Clausura finish could be reality. If that is the case then Pumas could be in relegation danger this season.

Pumas 2017-18 Predictions
How is Pumas going to be any better than they were a year ago? They were awful defensively, and in goal a year ago, and they did nothing to improve. Alfredo Saldívar was terrible in goal, saving just 67.7% of the shots he faced. Gerardo Alcoba looks to be on the way down and Abraham González doesn’t do enough to help out on defense. The two full-backs, Alan Mendoza and José Carlos van Rankin are also poor defensively.
Pumas can score but it may not matter. Nicolás Castillo is an excellent scorer and he gets support from Mauro Formica, Jesús Gallardo, Pablo Barrera, Bryan Rabello and Joffre Guerrón.
Rarely does a team win by playing no defense and relying entirely on offense. That is what Pumas will try and do and the results could get ugly, especially if some of the goal scoring goes away. One thing we do know is that good defense is always there in football, scoring is not. Pumas doesn’t play any defense, so if the scoring doesn’t continue, this team is in a world of hurt.
Pumas has all the looks of a team that is going to be in relegation danger this season. They were awful a year ago in Clausura and that form may just be reality for this club. They do have some potent goal scorers but they play virtually no defense, and it is hard to win playing that style of football. There is a good chance that Paco doesn’t survive if Pumas struggles early in the season and based on what the club did in the off-season that is a real possibility.
