The losses of Paulo da Silva and Sinha will be felt, but how much is the question. The two combined for 879 league appearances for Toluca. The loss of da Silva is the key one, as he was a regular starter last season. Toluca is hoping that Santiago García can step in and take his place.
Toluca runs a 4-4-2 system under Hernán Cristante. The team has Rubens Sambueza, Jesús Méndez and Antonio Ríos along with Ríos and Gabriel Hauche or Rodrigo Gómez. The midfield is controlled by Pablo “Pitu” Barrientos but he is getting up there in age at 32. Toluca needs him to have another big season if they are to contend.
Toluca is an interesting team for 2017-2018. They still have enough talent to make a title run, but there is no doubt their window is closing. Many of their top players are past their prime. Perhaps Cristante can coax another year out of his aging group and get this team into the playoffs. The concern is depth, as the team really has no supporting players to replace their aging stars. If any of the regulars go down, and that is more likely with older players, Toluca will struggle.
The most likely scenario for Toluca this season is another playoff run that falls short. That has been the story for this team in recent history and there is nothing to suggest that things will be different in 2017-2018.
