Money has not been able to turn Cruz Azul into a contender in Liga MX, as the team was just eight points clear of relegation last season. The club spent a ton of money last season and brought in a number of high profile transfers but things didn’t change. Paco Jémez took over last season and was the first foreign coach in the league since 2008 but he didn’t have much success. Cruz Azul is going right back to the well for 2017-2018, as they brought in Felipe Mora from Chile along with Edgar Mendez and Jordan Silva. The question is whether the additions will be enough to get Cruz Azul into the playoffs this season.

Cruz Azul Mexican Liga MX Odds

Cruz Azul is no real threat to win Liga MX but they are probably not in any relegation danger. The club spends a lot of money, and although the management isn’t very good, the club does have talent. A successful season for Cruz Azul would have them challenging for a playoff spot.

Cruz Azul 2017-18 Predictions

Last season Cruz Azul finished 14th in Apertura and 11th in Clausura. They could be improved this season, as they added Felipe Mora who was the top scorer in Chile last season in the Clausura. Mora is going to replace Jorge Benítez who left for Monterrey. The attacking options for Cruz Azul will include Mora, Martín Rodríguez, Ángel Mena and newcomer Édgar Méndez. It could be that Jémez uses a 4-3-3 formation this season but a 4-2-3-1 system is also an option.

Cruz Azul has a good defense led by Francisco “Gato” Silva and Gabriel Penalba. The club gave up fewer shots than any other team in the 2017 Clausura but they simply didn’t get enough scoring and they didn’t get good enough play in goal. The team really needs a better goal keeper but for now they are stuck with José de Jesús Corona.

The question with Cruz Azul is whether or not we simply give a pass to Jemez for last season.  Optimism was really high when he took over and the team flopped. He has more talent to work with this season and it could be that he needed a year to get his system in place.  Mora and Silva are good additions and should make an immediate impact.

Cruz Azul probably doesn’t have enough talent to challenge for a league title but they should be improved in the second season under Jemez. The key will be whether or not they can get just decent goal keeping, because they should be improved on offense this season and their defense is solid. The most likely scenario has Cruz Azul right on the cusp of making the playoffs in 2017-2018.
