What can Chivas Guadalajara do for an encore in 2017-2018? The club won their first league title in 10 years last season and also completed the league double by winning the Copa MX title. It won’t be easy for Chivas to duplicate that success this season, especially with a number of players nursing injuries to start the season. Chivas made the quarterfinals in Apertura last season after finishing fourth and then they won Clausura after finishing third. Chivas enters this season with some concerns, as they missed out on getting all of their transfer targets. They still have a talented squad but injuries are a big problem. Chivas also has to deal with players involved in the Gold Cup and Chivas will also have to face the added pressure of playing in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Chivas does have a good lineup with Ángel Zaldívar and Alan Pulido up front and Rodolfo Pizarro or Javier “Chofis” López behind. They have two solid midfielders in Michael Pérez and Carlos Salcido along with José Juan “Gallito” Vázquez.
Chivas will be without Alan Pulido to start the season, as he is injured and players on Gold Cup duty may not be at full strength when they return. Chivas is a young team with a lot of talent but it is never easy duplicating success, especially after a long drought. Chivas surprised many people a year ago by winning a title. Could it be that they surprise people again by falling down the table?
The most likely scenario for Chivas has them falling in the standings in 2017-2018. How far they fall is the question. They enter the season as one of the favorites to win the league but there is a good chance they struggle just to make the playoffs.
