Atlas has been able to hang onto many of their players from last year’s squad that finished sixth in Clausura, but they will have to replace Daniel Álvarez and Martín Barragán who both left for Necaxa. The good news for Los Rojinegros is that they did get Milton Caraglio who may be able to increase his scoring this season. It also could be that Estadio Jalisco gets more space to create for Bryan Garnica and Edgar Zaldívar. Atlas is a longshot to win Liga MX this season but they should be a squad that makes the playoffs.
Atlas Mexican Liga MX Odds
Atlas is one of those teams that rarely contends for a title but one that rarely is in any relegation danger. They have not won the title since 1950-51 and they are no real threat to win the title in 2017-2018.

Atlas 2017-18 Predictions
Manager Jose Cruz used both a 5-3-2 and a 4-4-2 system last season. He would prefer to use the 5-3-2 but only if Clifford Aboagye is healthy. Atlas likes to attack using full-backs Luis Reyes and José Maduena. They hope that Matiás Alustiza will deliver another big season in terms of goals scored. The midfield is solid with Luis Robles and Javier Salas and those two set things up for Aboagye.
The last time Atlas made the semifinals was in 2004 so the goal for this squad is to have some playoff success. It may be a lofty goal, as there is no real reason to think Atlas is a title contender. They didn’t do much in the off-season to improve the roster and they might actually be slightly weaker. The addition of Caraglio is a decent one but the club might miss Alvarez and Barragan more than expected.
Atlas should be good enough to make the playoffs in 2017-2018 but they don’t look like a title contender. They don’t have any superstar scorers and their defense isn’t anything special. The good news is that Atlas shouldn’t be in any relegation danger this season. The most likely scenario has Atlas finishing in 7th or 8th place. That type of finish won’t excite fans but they should be used to it, as Atlas is the consummate “average” team, as they do enough to avoid the bottom half of the table but rarely challenge for a top position. That should be the case again for Atlas this season.
