Southampton is coming off a successful season that saw them finish eighth in the Premier League and finish runner-up in the EFL Cup. Even though Southampton had a good season, manager Claude Puel was not brought back, so the Saints will be led in 2017-2018 by Mauricio Pellegrino. He will be their fourth different manager in the last five seasons. Southampton is given a lot of respect from the oddsmakers, as their point total was set at 53.5. They may struggle to reach that number if they can’t hold onto Virgil van Dijk who is said to be in high demand by Liverpool.

Odds To Win Premier League: +6600 (Field)
Odds To Finish Top 4: +2500
Total Points Over/Under: 53.5
Southampton is no threat to win the Premier League but they also shouldn’t be in any real relegation danger. Southampton is a longshot to win the Premier League at +2500 and those odds may be too low, considering Southampton has a point total of 53.5. The team made only a couple of moves in the off-season to improve their roster, so it is hard to get too excited about their chances in 2017-2018.

What's New?
The only early addition of note for Southampton was the signing of Jan Bednarek who the team got from Lech Poznan. The Saints did make a late signing, as they signed Mario Lemina from Juventus. He is 23-years old and spent the last two years in Italy.
“Mario is an outstanding talent who has already achieved a great deal in his career, winning a number of titles and gaining experience of playing on some of the biggest stages in world football.” Southampton vice chairman Les Reed said to The Guardian. “Mario still has his best years ahead of him and we believe he will not only be an excellent acquisition for us in the immediate future but that he will also be able to realize even more of his potential here in the years to come.”
What's Gone?
Southampton lost Jay Rodriguez to West Brom, Lloyd Isgrove to Barnsley, Harrison Reed on loan to Norwich, Cuco Martina to Everton and they released Martin Caceres.
Southampton 2017-18 Predictions
One of the toughest teams to predict this season is Southampton, as they have a new manager in Pellegrino who did a great job with Alaves. Last season the Saints struggled to score goals, as they had just 41 in the Premier League, so there is cause for concern. Pellegrino plays a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 and looks to have his team counter.
Pellegrino has shown a great ability to organize a solid back four and he should have Southampton among the top defensive teams in the Premier League this season. The question is who will score the goals. Southampton needs a big year from Sofiane Boufal who was a bit of a disappointment a year ago.
Pellegrino said to The Daily Echo that his team needs to continue to improve. “We have to improve and to learn about everything in the team. In the Premier League the characteristics of the teams are different, are more direct, even the biggest team. “But for that reason you have for me the good teams are the teams that adapt in every single situation, and you have to adapt to every single situation.”
Southampton finished in 8th place last season but they were no threat to the top teams, as they were 15 points behind 7th place Everton. It is somewhat surprising that Southampton has a point total of 53.5 considering they finished with 46 points last season and appear to be no better in 2016-2017 than they were a year ago.
Finishing in the upper half of the table may be a bit too optimistic for Southampton this season, as an 11th or 12th place finish seems more likely. Taking the Saints’ games under the total may also be worth considering, as the team is stout defensively and they did next to nothing to upgrade what was a poor offense a year ago.
