The first season for Jose Mourinho at Manchester United was a mixed bag, as the team disappointed in the Premier League, finishing a disappointing sixth, but they won the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League. Scoring was a major problem for United last season, as they scored just 54 goals, 31 fewer than first place Chelsea. United hopes they solved the goal scoring problem with the addition of Romelu Lukaku who has scored 85 goals in the past five years. United will have to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic who suffered a knee injury but early reports indicate Ibrahimovic is making a great recovery and the team may bring him back in December or January. Oddsmakers think United is a notch below Chelsea and Manchester City in the Premier League, but a Top 4 finish seems likely.

Manchester United Premier League Futures Odds

Odds To Win Premier League: +350

Odds To Finish Top 4: -350

Total Points Over/Under: 77.5

United is considered a darkhorse to win the Premier League in 2017-2018 with odds of +350. Based on the point total of 77.5, it seems unlikely United is going to challenge Chelsea or Manchester City for the title. Mourinho has worked magic in the past, so it is not out of the question for United to win the title, but they begin the season as the third choice.

Mourinho said to BT Sport that he thinks this year’s United team is the best one he has ever had. “I’m so happy to be the manager of these guys; I’ve never had a group I like so much during my long career I’m going to fight for them.”

Manchester United 2017-18 Predictions

United was not a contender to win the title last season, as they finished 24 points behind Chelsea. United should be vastly improved this season and Mourinho’s teams normally show great improvement in his second year. The Red Devils were able to keep David de Gea and the additions of Lukaku and Matic are excellent ones. Matic is excellent in the midfield and he should provide a lot of defensive stability.

The key player of course will be Lukaku who has to score on a regular basis if United is to win. He has done that in the past with Everton so there is no reason to think he won’t have even more success at United. It is also interesting that United is looking at bringing back Ibrahimovic when he gets fully healthy. If United has both Lukaku and Ibrahimovic they could turn into a team that challenges for the title.

The pressure is on Mourinho to get United into title contention this season and to make a deep run in the Champions League. A Top 4 finish is demanded out of Mourinho this season after last year’s disappointing sixth place effort.

Mourinho said to The Guardian recently that his team is behind the top teams in the Champions League. “Manchester United are one of the top three football clubs in the world, no doubt about it, but the football club is one thing and the team’s credentials going into a competition are another thing entirely. We have a giant on our chest, which is really heavy, but we don’t compare our potential to the biggest clubs in Europe right now. We’ll take it step by step and be humble. The first step is to try to finish in the top three. If we manage that, we’ll try to finish in the top two. Then, when you’re in the Champions League last 16 draw, anything can happen.”

A third place finish for United seems the most likely scenario for the 2017-2018 Premier League season.
