Somewhat surprisingly, Arsene Wenger still has his job at Arsenal even though the team failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in more than two decades, as they finished in 5th place, one point behind Liverpool. The Gunners will be competing in the Europa League this season but all of their attention will be on the Premier League, as they try and compete for the league title. The problems for Arsenal are that they still don’t have a great defense and that they may not be able to hold on to leading scorer Alexis Sanchez who is said to be asking for the same type of money that Cristiano Ronaldo is making. Arsenal may be forced to sell their top scorer, which would make finishing in the top four in 2017-2018 very difficult.
Arsenal Premier League Futures Odds
Odds To Win Premier League: +1200
Odds To Finish Top 4: -110
Total Points Over/Under: 72.5
The Gunners have odds to win the Premier League that may be too optimistic at +1200. Arsenal has a lot of questions on defense and major drama surrounding the status of Sanchez. Finishing in the top four is definitely not a given, although the odds at -110 would seem to indicate the Gunners have a reasonable chance. The point’s total of 72.5 would seem to be about right, and that would mean almost assuredly a finish of 5th or worse in 2017-2018.
Arsenal Competitions in 2017-18
English Premier League
Europa League
FA Cup
EFL Cup
Community Shield
The Gunners will not be in the Champions League for the first time in 21 years under Wenger. Arsenal finished fifth last season and salvaged the season by winning the FA Cup. Arsenal has 29 major trophies in their history, including 13 league titles and they have won three of the last four FA Cups. The problem for Arsenal is that their north London rivals, Tottenham seem to have moved past them in the Premier League rankings.
The Gunners did show some heart in the Community Shield, as they defeated Chelsea in a match that was decided by penalty kicks.
What's New?
It is all about Alexandre Lacazette, as the Gunners got him from Lyon. They also got Sead Kolasinac from Schalke. All of the attention is going to be on Lacazette, as the Gunners expect him to have a huge season.
What's Gone?
The Gunners lost Wojciech Szczesny (Juventus), Yaya Sanogo (Toulouse), and Chris Willock (Benfica). None of the losses are huge but if Sanchez is lost that would be a major blow. He has less than a year left on his contract but all indications are that he is not going anywhere this season. He had 24 goals and 10 assists for Arsenal last season.
All indications are that Sanchez is going to stay. “Yes, the board supports me to make the decisions on a technical front.” Wenger said to Fox Sports. “I can tell you is that he is focused, and my decision is clear: he will stay and he will respect that. It is as simple as that.”
Arsenal 2017-18 Predictions
If Sanchez stays then Arsenal should compete for a top 4 spot. If he leaves then the Gunners could finish sixth or worse. The Gunners simply don’t have a strong enough defense to compete for the league title. To finish in the top four they need Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Lacazette to score.
The Gunners could be improved if Lacazette does what is expected but Arsenal still doesn’t look to be as good as Chelsea, Manchester City or Tottenham. The question is whether or not they can get past United and Everton to finish in the top four.
Many people were calling for Wenger to be sacked last season but he is coming back for his 22nd season with Arsenal. He will have to balance this season in the Premier League with the schedule of the Europa League.
Assuming that Wenger is correct, Arsenal should have a good chance to finish in the Top 4 this season with Sanchez and Lacazette leading the way.
