The Redskins had everything in their control last season but lost their regular season finale to the New York Giants to finish 8-7-1 and miss the playoffs. That loss may have spelled the end for Washington’s recent success, as in the off-season the team fired general manager Scot McCloughan. The Redskins still don’t know what to do with quarterback Kirk Cousins, as they are leery of signing him to a big contract and of course, the team is still owned by Daniel Snyder. The Redskins had a potent offense with Cousins at the helm last season, as they were 3rd in the league in total yards, but the defense was a mess, giving up nearly 400 yards per game. Whether or not the Redskins have success in 2017 will likely be determined by how well the team did in the off-season upgrading the defense. Oddsmakers are not sure what to expect from Washington, as they set the win total for the team at 7.5.

Washington Redskins Super Bowl Odds

Super Bowl Odds: +7200

NFC Championship Odds: +3450

NFC East Odds: +500

Odds Redskins Make Playoffs: +375

Redskins Regular Season Win Total: 7.5

The Redskins are a longshot to win the Super Bowl and a longshot just to make the playoffs at odds of nearly 4-1. The win total for Washington is 7.5, which means the team is expected to be about .500. The problem for the Redskins is their schedule, as it ranks as the 7th-most difficult in the NFL for the 2017 season. An early season bye in Week 5 also doesn’t help, as the Redskins could have used it later in the season, as they have no easy games from Week 7 through the end of the season.

The Washington Redskins Will Be a Success If…

The defense is improved. The Redskins simply couldn’t stop opposing offenses last season. They gave up 377.9 yards per game and the lack of success cost coordinator Joe Barry his job. The team hired Greg Manusky to take over the defense and they focused on defense in the NFL Draft, as they took Jonathan Allen from Alabama and Fabian Moreau from UCLA. The team also added Terrell McClain and Stacy McGee in free agency and they got Zach Brown from Buffalo.

The Redskins have some talent on defense, as Ryan Kerrigan had 11 sacks and Josh Norman is a top cover corner. The team will miss Trent Murphy who is out for the first four games of the season due to suspension.

The Washington Redskins Will Be a Failure If…

Cousins lets the pressure of a potentially big contract get to him. Cousins has played at a high level the past couple of years and Washington is now faced with the dilemma of whether or not to pay him. Cousins may not have an easy time in 2017, as the team has a new offensive coordinator in Matt Cavanaugh, a new play caller, as head coach Jay Gruden is taking over and a new receiving corps. The Redskins no longer have Pierre Garcon or DeSean Jackson, as Terrelle Pryor comes over from Cleveland.

Cousins has played every game the past two seasons for Washington and last year he threw for nearly 5,000 yards with 25 TDs. Cousins does have some weapons around him, as Jordan Reed is one of the top tight ends in football and the team took running back Samaje Perine in the NFL Draft.

Washington Redskins 2017 Predictions

The Redskins are a dysfunctional franchise, as Snyder simply doesn’t know how to run a team. That does not mean Washington doesn’t have talent on both sides of the ball, but something always seems to go wrong with the Redskins.

Most of the attention with the Redskins has focused on Cousins and his future with the team. He is playing on the franchise tag again this season and the Redskins have yet to commit to him long term. The Redskins would appear to be better on defense than they were a year ago but only if their players stay healthy, as newcomers Allen and Moreau are injury prone.

The offense for Washington should still be fine but Cousins still hasn’t convinced everyone he is an elite quarterback.

The schedule for Washington in 2017 is difficult, so it is hard to see how the Redskins make the playoffs in a tough division. It will probably take at least 10 wins to make the playoffs and this year’s Washington team seems more likely to go 6-10 than 10-6.
