Over the entire history of the NBA, there have always been a percentage of teams who had a legitimate chance to capture a championship at the start of the year and a significantly larger percentage of teams who are playing to form dynasties down the line. That's the case in the NBA nowadays as well, though the teams who race to the bottom seem to be building better squads quicker with each passing year.

Atlanta Hawks

After a challenge in the middle of the Eastern Conference for years, the Hawks have torn it all down and are going to try to strike it big in the NBA Draft.

Boston Celtics

The C's successfully split up their initial "Big Three" and built a tremendous amount of assets because of it. Now, they're back at the top of the Eastern Conference after a very short rebuild.

Brooklyn Nets

The Nets sacrificed the last several seasons to try to make a run at the title four and five years ago. The plan failed miserably, and what's left is a team that is desperately just waiting out a horrible rebuilding project.

Charlotte Hornets

Michael Jordan wants to do nothing more than win in Charlotte, but he's yet to get incredibly lucky in the NBA Draft to find those pieces to build around.

Chicago Bulls

The days of the great Bulls are said and done with. This team will rebuild once again, but it never made it to the top of the heap when Derrick Rose came to town as the franchise's savior all those years ago.

Cleveland Cavaliers

It's amazing how much damage one player can do. With a young LeBron James, the Cavaliers were a powerhouse that routinely challenged for the NBA title. Without him, they had the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft two straight seasons. Now, they've got "The King" back once again and finally have their championship to show for it.

Dallas Mavericks

The Dirk Nowitzki era yielded one title for Dallas, but the Mavericks seem to have struck gold with Dennis Smith and could be back sooner than later.

Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets are starting to really come together, and many are starting to compare them to Golden State and the way it built its dynasty.

Detroit Pistons

Stan Van Gundy has tried his best with this rebuild, but at some point, the Pistons need some bona fide guards to challenge the Cavs in the East.

Golden State Warriors

The defending NBA champs have built their team through the NBA Draft. No team has gotten luckier, especially without a single top-5 pick of its own on the roster. Signing Kevin Durant in free agency a couple years ago only made the strong impossibly stronger.

Houston Rockets

Picking up Chris Paul gives James Harden his running mate in the backcourt that might finally be able to topple the best of the West.

Indiana Pacers

Paul George was a great stat sheet stuffer in Indianapolis, but he was never really a winner. By trading him, the Pacers are finally able to start their rebuild.

Los Angeles Clippers

It's time to admit that it didn't work in L.A. Chris Paul is gone. Blake Griffin is never healthy. DeAndre Jordan still can't shoot free throws. And the Clips are stuck in a conference where they couldn't possibly be much higher than the fifth-best team.

Los Angeles Lakers

The sideshow that comes with Lonzo Ball might be annoying, but he might just be the next great Lakers guard that can bring this team back to respectability.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizz have always been based off of their defense, and that's why they're a pain to try to beat in the playoffs if they get there no matter the foe.

Miami Heat

After winning a couple championships with LeBron James, the Heat have refused to go into full-blown rebuilding mode. They keep bringing in just enough pieces to the puzzle to suggest that they might be able to give it a go in the weaker East at any point.

Milwaukee Bucks

Giannis Antetokounmpo is a franchise centerpiece, but he still needs some help around him to turn the Bucks into real contenders.

Minnesota Timberwolves

By drafting well and finally making the move to bring in Jimmy Butler, the pieces are all in place for Minnesota. Executing in the stacked West is a totally different story.

New Orleans Pelicans

The Pels went for it when they traded for Boogie Cousins, but the tandem of "The Boogie and The Brow" doesn't seem to be working out.

New York Knicks

Is Allan Houston still on the Knicks' cap? What about Stephon Marbury? We jest, of course, but contracts like those have held New York back for decades.

Oklahoma City Thunder

When the Thunder lost Kevin Durant, they only needed a year to go out and regroup by bringing in Paul George and Carmelo Anthony.

Orlando Magic

The Magic have been trying to find the pieces to build around, but they don't seem like they've hit it big yet with a single draft pick.

Philadelphia 76ers

"The Process" is finally yielding some results. The Sixers raced to the bottom as best they could, won the gamble of doing so more often than not, and now, they have top pick after top pick on their roster.

Phoenix Suns

The Suns have a few nice assets, but they've struck out on literally every superstar they've tried bringing to the desert.

Portland Trail Blazers

Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum are desperately trying to bring a swingman or a big to the PDX that can finally legitimately make them competitive.

Sacramento Kings

Trading DeMarcus Cousins for a pupu platter instead of some legitimate assets is another example of why this team hasn't been anything to write home about for decades.

San Antonio Spurs

The consummate NBA franchise, Gregg Popovich has continually kept this team in the hunt for NBA titles even without having a high lottery pick since Tim Duncan.

Toronto Raptors

The Raptors have some talent, but they keep running into the Cavaliers and keep getting blown out of the water. It's hard to say this team is truly anywhere near an NBA title.

Utah Jazz

It was a nice run with Gordon Hayward, but with his departure comes another reclamation projected in Salt Lake City.

Washington Wizards

John Wall and Bradley Beal are reason enough for the Wizards to try to go for it in the East. They're close enough to be believable contenders in a conference with just two other serious heavyweights.
